Your own website
Your own website is more affordable than you think. Your own website is also the best value for your advertising money. It is always there and available as a reference to your product or service. Compared to advertising in newspapers and magazines, consider this: Your website cannot be eaten by the customer's dog. Your customer cannot spill coffee on it. Your customer's spouse cannot accidentally throw away the one that was really important. Your website is viewed by someone who owns or has access to a computer. You know s/he has some money. Your website will cost less than 10% of a newsprint advertising program.
Some guidelines for having your own website built:
1. Keep the name, and therefore the address, as easy to remember as is possible. If the customer makes one spelling mistake in the address, your page is not found and your opposition gets the business. (If you think spelling mistakes are not a problem, I once received a letter with five mistakes in my name. It is only three syllables!!)
2. Keep the site clear and simple. How many times have you abandoned a website because the home page was so fancy that it took several minutes to load or a page within the site had pictures that would not fit on two of your screens? A webpage that does not load in seconds might as well not be there.
3. Keep the site logical and easy to navigate. If a customer wants to go back to something, do not place obstacles in his path and do not rely on his memory.
4. Do not get ripped off. Get several price quotes. Look at websites that were built by whoever you want to go with.
5. Make sure that you can get changes made to the site and that it will not cost huge amounts of money if you have a price change or a phone number change.
6. Make sure you website will be found by your customer. This is important and must be set up correctly by the person who builds the site.
